Train to become a Driving Instructor
We offer professional training to become a Driving Instructor. We can take you from your first tentative enquiry into the workings of the industry, right through to becoming an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). From here you can join The Green Cat Driving School, and enjoy one of the most satisfying jobs available.
We know this is probably the single biggest career move you will make, and how important this decision is. We are here for any questions you have at all – please feel free to call us directly to discuss 07472903423 or fill out the contact form.
We are proud to be a small local business, based in Southport, supporting local people with their driving ambitions. We firmly believe that being a driving instructor is one of the best jobs in the world, and we want to share this passion with others.
To become an ADI, there are several steps to take. These are:
1 – Check if you can become an instructor
2 – Apply to become a driving instructor
3 – Get a trainer
4 – Take the theory test (ADI part 1)
5 – Take the driving ability test (ADI part 2)
6 – Get practice teaching
7 – Take the instructional ability test (ADI part 3)
8 – Register and start working as an instructor
The average timescale from first enquiring, to instructing your first lessons is approximately 3 to 4 months, and is generally dependent on the speed of the DBS checks. At this point you would be on your trainee PDI licence, yet would be earning money to train! From here, you have 6 months maximum to take and pass your ADI part 3 exam. You are allowed 3 attempts at the 3 ADI exams, and if you fail all 3 attempts at any stage, you will have to wait 2 years before starting the process again.
To be eligible to proceed, you need to pass motoring conviction checks, pass enhanced background checks (DBS), have held a full UK or EU driving licence for at least 3 years and be over the age of 21. For more info, please visit the government page check if you can become a driving instructor.
Why learn to become a driving instructor with The Green Cat Driving School?
We will support you every step of the way, and at a pace that you are comfortable with. We are extremely personable and knowledgeable, and will offer advice accordingly. We do all of our training on a one to one basis, unlike the vast majority of other schools, and we like to think we offer a far more personal approach when compared to some.
We offer 2 routes to becoming a driving instructor:

-
Pay as you go
With either route taken, you can take the ‘earn whilst you learn’ option, whereby you become a Potential Driving Instructor (PDI). Further detail can be found here. If you take this option, we strongly recommend that you do not rely on this as a sole form of earnings – it is intended as real life learning!
Then when you have been through the various stages and passed your exams – congratulations you are now a fully qualified driving instructor! Now its up to you whether you join our fantastic franchise (just £50 per week) or go on your own.

Additional costs?
You will have some fees to pay the DVSA for the tests. The current price detail can be found here. The ADI part 1 test is £81, ADI part 2 is £111 and the ADI part 3 is also £111. When this is passed, you will have to apply to be on the register. This costs £300 for your first badge. If you opt for a PDI trainee licence, this costs £140. These fees are all paid directly to the DVSA, and are only paid at the time of the booking for the tests or the time of application for the licences. Therefore the cost is spread and linked to the speed you progress.
You will also need a reliable car (many lease – we can fully advise), dual pedal controls and instructor insurance.
